This is a collection of twenty flies originated by John Traherne in the 1890's and featured in "The Fishing Gazette" magazines during that time. This series can be purchased as individual flies tied only on 7/0 hooks (except where noted) and mounted in my standard 11x14 frame (to see the frame click here). In the future I will offer the entire series in a single, huge frame. The flies will be arranged around a period photograph of John Traherne himself.
Substitute materials used:
Blue Chatterer - Kingfisher
Indian Crow - Dyed Ringneck Pheasant White neck feather
Note: there is no acceptable substitute for the blue barred Jay feathers used in a number of these flies. So authentic Jay will be used. It is not easy to obtain Jay so please check with me before ordering Lange Syne, Nelly Bly, The Chatterer, Lapwing, Evangeline and JPT.
The Chatterer uses countless Blue Chatterer feathers for the body so I can only offer this fly using Kingfisher as a substitute. If you absolutely MUST have this fly with authentic Chatterer, please check with me and I'll see what I can do but be prepared to accept the fly with Kingfisher. If I am able to obtain enough Chatterer to tie the fly I will let you know the actual cost to do it. It will be VERY expensive!
The Lapwing uses only the rump feathers of the Fairy Bluebird (also known as "Enamelled Thrush" and can only be tied on a 5/0 hook. There is no acceptable substitute for Fairy Bluebird and these feathers are extremely hard to obtain so please check with me before ordering this fly.
The Black Argus uses Western Tragopan for the wings. There are acceptable substitutes available (specially dyed feathers). Western Tragopan is almost impossible to obtain. Prices for a pair of these feathers can reach into the hundreds of dollars so if you want this fly tied with Tragopan, please check with me.
Note: In the listings below if a fly does not have a "substitute" price that means all the materials used in that pattern are readily available and are "genuine".
Hook Size: All the flies are tied on 7/0 or 8/0 hooks except where noted otherwise.

The Full Traherne Series Framed
The full Traherne Series can be purchased as a single framed collection of the 20 flies shown on this page. The frame measures 24" x 28" and is composed of three mats with a well for the flies similar to the Blacker 15 series (click here to see that collection). All the flies are specially mounted on posts using no glue of any kind. For the framed series, flies will be tied on 5/0 and 7/0 hooks depending on the fly.
